MEDIA STATEMENT

We are not forgetting the important of circular economy amid pandemic. While most of us familiar with 3R: Recycle, Reuse, Reduce; MBWA has always pay more attention on the Reduce and Reuse. As a responsible association, since 2019, we have started to explore opportunity in how to contribute back to the society and environment, in order to carry out our role as a responsible industry player.

Bottled water consumption seeing an increase of 7%-8% annually. MBWA estimated there are 2,880 million bottles being bought and sold in Malaysia annually. (globally, it is estimated 1million bottles are bought and sold per minute). And the figure is going to increase throughout the years to come.

Base on the study by Pacific Institute, a 500ml bottled water will contribute an estimated 82.8gm of CO2; in which 29% attribute to transportation emission, 30% for the production of resin, 8% attribute to the production of bottle and 33% to other activities involves such as land filling, collection, etc.

Bottling water process had experienced tremendous development in terms of reduce; PET bottle and HDPE closure, a 500ml PET bottle weight has reduced from 24g in 2010 to 12.5g in 2020, a reduction of 48% in 10 years. If base on estimated consumption of 2,880 million bottles annually, it has saved a 33,120,000kgs virgin material in a year; which equal to 938,244kgs of CO2 reduction. (base on research by Pacific Institute Research, 1ounce PET = 1ounce Co2).

On the second strategy of Reuse, this year, MBWA is honor that can work together with Hiroyuki Industries (M) Sdn Bhd to promote the usage of food grade certified RPET onto our bottled water manufacturing. Hiroyuki is the first in the ASEAN region who been certified food grade compliance on its RPET production. Bottle to bottle movement is a vital step in our industry towards creating a circular economy. Base on Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) such step can further contribute to the reduction of carbon footprint in our nation.

Currently, many organizations are in talks with government to create a sustainability system in their respective nations, Malaysia is no exception. Currently WWF is talking to government in endorsing EPR (Extended Producers Responsibility) for our sustainability blue plan towards 2030 (Zero plastic road map). Whereby the market will create a PRO (Producer Responsibility Organization) to work on it. It merely same as other deposit scheme/social tax scheme, which been or going to be conducted in other nation in Europe and ASEAN. The main objective is to create a sustainable supply chain in our nation.

Today we mark our first step in making this objective a reality by 2030. Currently MBWA members are contributing 65%-70% of bottled water production in Malaysia. We have our very first 7 companies who become the batch of frontline: VS RO Industries (M) Sdn Bhd, Osmo Packaging Sdn Bhd, Sprigfresh Manufacturing Sdn Bhd, Life Water Industries Sdn Bhd, Nabalu Trading Sdn Bhd, Malee Mineral Water Sdn Bhd and Waterworld Network Sdn Bhd.

We are planning to welcome more members to joint our call to contribute our efforts in protecting the environment we live in. We are targeting by 2025, 85% of our members will have RPET in their bottled water manufacturing. And by 2030, we are targeting 100% participation from all bottled water manufacturers.

MBWA hopes that with this signing of MoU with Hiroyuki will open up more opportunities to work together in creating the awareness in the society, the significant impact of using RPET onto bottled water. At the same time, MBWA also call for other companies who are not our members but also in the bottling line to joint our movement.

Nevertheless, such activities will not succeed without support from government. It is our hope that such MoU activities will be as a show case to government on our commitment. We also wish we able to have more dialogue with government ministry on how to help or promote or to encourage the industry to participate in this sustainable supply chain.

Last but not least, MBWA would like to take this opportunity to announce our new, special RPET logo for this movement. All the members who used RPET in their bottled water will be issued an Approval letter from MBWA to use this logo on their label, so that public can extinguish out the true and recognized REPT bottle.

市场将据此创立一个PRO(生产者责任组织)来进行有关工作。

MBWA公会成员在全马的瓶装水产量中占65%-70%,而我们雀跃地宣布,有7组公会会员成为此计划的先锋,分别是:VS RO Industries (M) Sdn Bhd 、Osmo Packaging Sdn Bhd、Springfresh Manufacturing Sdn Bhd、Life Water Industries Sdn Bhd、Nabalu Trading Sdn Bhd、Malee Mineral Water Sdn Bhd以及Waterworld Network Sdn Bhd。
